ON THE COVER: A curved atrium wall at the new Stanford Hospital in San Francisco displays the names of donors to the $2 billion, 824,000-sf project. Designed by Perkins Eastman Architects and Rafael Vinoly Architects, the building can withstand an 8.0 earthquake and remain operational thanks to 208 base isolators it sits atop.
